This is exciting news for fans of here solo music, and I myself will be completely honest and up front in saying that I enjoyed her second album Like A Rose the best. But more and more bands are beginning to release acoustic albums shortly after the original album, to accompany it.

Blackberry Smoke did it last month  and a few more artists did respectively. I feel it give another presentation to the same song vocally, and can give another character to the same song from a listeners point of view.

Some songs speak to us differently when brought about from different avenues, if that makes any sense? Any fans will appreciate the different form of music and this approach may generate new fans of this particular artist.

I can tell you that Interstate Gospel brought forth a TON of critical acclaim especially from me and several other sources of media. I see a big tour ahead for them, with only one small problem…Hollar Annie’s pregnancy.

This issue has raised many a skeptic as to how extensive their tour will be able to be, before she needs rest. We shall have to see how things pan out for them on this situation.

Sparrow: Acoustic Sessions
I’m so excited to share a few songs from Sparrow in their most raw form. Before I wrote these songs, I went away for several days to dig up and dig thru old hurt. I acknowledge a lot of truths I never had, and I began healing…and not just the temporary kind. When I listen to these songs, I hear pain, forgiveness for myself and others, and finally, freedom…a freedom to move forward and grow. Thank you all for the love and support! Xo, Ashley.

Here lately I have been keeping an enduring eye on the Red Dirt community, all their wonderful festivals and happenings. There is indeed a plethora of bands to enjoy around Texas and Oklahoma respectively, both having their own unique identity. I enjoy studying the different styles of Country Music from different regions of America, and Red Dirt is one them that has so many derivative flavors.

Bearing all that in mind, I wanted to stop a moment and tell you about a new live album from the Read Southall Band from Oklahoma. This piece is from the Red 11 website:  Formed In Stillwater Oklahoma, The Read Southall Band is comprised of 4 native Oklahoman’s. With all members having different influences in music, they have come together to create a unique red dirt/southern rock sound. With overdriven guitars and heavy drums the Read Southall Band aims to deliver a rock and roll experience at every show.

Not only does this live album span songs from their album “Six String Sorrow” it also includes songs from their 2017 album “Borrowed Time”. This album was recorded at the Tower Theater in Oklahoma City, and will have a few cover songs as well as originals.

Sarah Shook and The Disarmers Bring Their Outlaw Country To South GA

  1. By Joshua Wallace

This past Friday night (February 1st, 2019) Sarah Shook’s current tour with The Disarmers rolled into Valdosta, GA at Ashley Street Station.  There was no opening act for this evening so the band played 2 sets that spanned 26 songs.  The evening covered tracks from Sarah Shook’s entire career, even with some from the album Seven by Sarah Shook & The Devil.

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers

The night started with fan favorite “Good As Gold” off her new album Years which was one of my favorite records of 2018.  She quickly followed it up with “Lesson” and “Parting Words” from the same record.  The band then switched gears and went into a couple of songs from Sidelong with “Heal Me” and “Fuck Up” which is always a crowd favorite.

Sarah Shook, Eric Peterson (electric guitar) and Aaron Olivia (bass guitar)

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers even went into deeper album cuts such as Sidelong’s “Make It Up To Mama” and “Road That Leads To You”.  The band even got to one of my deeper favorites
“Nothin’ Feels Right But Doin’ Wrong” off that first album.  They finished up the second set with newer tracks “The Way She Looked At You” and “Devil May Care” which were cut from the Years album but released as a single later on.

Phil Sullivan (Pedal Steel Guitar) and Kevin McClain (Drums)

The band’s second set was loaded with fan favorites.  They kicked it off with “No Name” off Sidelong and eventually made their way to “Dwight Yoakam” off the same album which is one of my favorites from the group.  The second set also included it’s share of deeper cuts with “Misery Without Company” from Sidelong and “Ghost Town” from Seven.  The band closed out the evening with a trio of tracks from Years with “The Bottle Never Let Me Down”, “Damned If I Do, Damned If I Don’t” and “New Ways To Fail” before finishing up with “The Nail” from Sidelong.

Check Out Our Coverage of the Years album Here

Whether you are a fan of Sarah Shook & The Disarmers or just discovering them, you got your money’s worth with this one.  Sarah Shook blasted through 26 tracks covering mostly everything you would want to hear and then some.  The band just finished up this round of tour dates that took them from Tennessee to Texas to Florida and back through Georgia.  She is always on tour and you can check out future tour dates at this link.  Gary Hayes Country will be covering Sarah Shook & The Disarmers again this year at Tumbleweed Country Music Festival which has tickets available now.

Mr. Randy Travis To Release A New Book.

It’s no secret that Mr. Randy Travis has suffered many trials in the last few years, and it is a miracle he survived them. This May 14th we will all get to learn more about the iconic singer, his troubled upbringing, and exactly what was going on in his head as he drank and stole cars at 14.

He stated in a recent press release that the candle is burning, and it is time to tell his story to us as only he knows. For many many months, we all joined together as a music community and donated our time as well as prayers for our beloved Mr. Randy. See, we all understand how imperfect people are and we don’t care about his past. We are all just grateful he has a future with us, because Country Music still needs him now.

He recorded over twenty albums, and charted over 50 billboard hits in his career. His debut album Storms Of Life sold more than four million copies since the 1980s. He saw success in follow up platinum and multi platinum albums as well.

In the mid ninties he saw shorter chart success and began recording more Christian material like the ever popular hit Three Wooden Crosses, and began more personal declines we will all get to read about in this tome.

Publisher’s Description

The long-awaited, deeply personal story of one of American music’s greatest icons, a remarkable tale of the utmost heights of fame and success, the deepest lows of life’s sorrows, and a miraculous return from the brink of death—told as only Randy Travis can.

Beloved around the world, Randy Travis has sold more than 25 million albums in both country and gospel and is considered one of the finest performers of his generation, admired by superstars across the musical landscape, from Garth Brooks to Mick Jagger.

From a working-class background in North Carolina to a job as a cook and club singer in Nashville to his “overnight success” with his smash 1986 album Storms of Life–which launched the neotraditional movement in country music–Randy’s first three decades are a true rags-to-riches story.

But in 2009, this seemingly charmed life began a downward spiral. His marriage dissolved, he discovered that his finances had unraveled due to dishonest deals made behind his back, and his struggles with anger led to alcohol abuse, public embarrassment, and even police arrest in 2012.

Then, just as he was putting his life back together, Randy suffered a devastating viral cardiomyopathy that led to a massive stroke which he was not expected to survive. Yet he not only survived but also learned to walk again and in 2016 accepted his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame by singing the hymn that explains his life today: “Amazing Grace.”

Filled with never-before-told stories, Forever and Ever, Amen is a riveting tale of unfathomable success, great joy, deep pain, and redemption that can come only from above.

Grow The Woods In 2019.

Feb 052019

Last night I witnessed one hell of a good performance from both bands that were on the bill, in a not so great venue. 2019 has already been an epic year for The Steel Woods upon the release of Old News, and every show I attended on this tour has grown exponentially.

Lead singer Mr. Wes brings his own twist to the vocals, that differentiates him from others. When I hear them on any outlet I can readily identify them with the vocals. Recently I admired his presentation of the song Old News, and how well the lyrics are written. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that it’s one of the best lines in a song for me, in the last few years.

I don’t necessarily care for the venue they were in tonight as I create this article, and I have another idea. I think I need to stop and make an observation here, and a huge accolade to some very special people that helped make The Steel Woods rise to the top……us fans.

I applaud each and every one of you warriors I see at these shows night after night, standing in line in the rain and cold for the cause of local music. I see a truly fine band page group run by some very passionate people on Facebook. Now, more often than not these large groups generate drama however to say that their fan pages haven’t been responsible for some of their success is ludicrous. Every time I followed the Steel Woods Nation I have always had pleasant interaction.

To say that many of the people running them have bad intentions is also wrong, but so many of them have had their share of intense drama. That alone looms the possibility of turning away future fans that may be dipping their toes in the water to check the temperature. One of the many excuses I hear the pop country folks give for not giving local music a chance, is that we fight too much. And to be honest I can actually accept that as answer to this debate, so running a clean and friendly page like The Steel Woods Nation in the fashion they do is integral to me as a fan AND a journalist.

You juxtapose those two factors here, and you get the phenomenal events that are taking place with The Steel Woods right now. I am absolutely adamant that in the next year or so, they will be playing bigger venues like their friend Cody Jinks, who equally agrees as he crept up on their set two weeks ago in Nashville. You can read all about that right HERE along with our review of the album HERE.

We have a GREAT review of the new Boo Ray album called Tennessee Alabama Fireworks coming, and it releases on February 15th. You can read all about his holiday playlist HERE from this past Christmas, and I covered a recent show he played at Dee’s Country Cocktail Lounge. I have a BUNCH of news coming from my buddy this month here, and YOU NEED to go out and catch him on stage!

His new video for his first sing “20 Questions” was released recently. This is property of Paste Magazine, and used with permission. This single launched on Spotify and many other resources for music, as well as his other song “Don’t Look Back” recorded at the iconic Sun Studios.

See folks, many folks play music for a living, but there are a few folks that LIVE music like Boo Ray does. I have had a few conversations with him about music history, and I found him to quite enjoyable to talk to. He knows about where the genre he loves came from, and who ushered in it’s growth. HE IS one of the many responsible for continuing the passion of our Legends, and you can SEE IT in his demeanor.

As far as I’m concerned he and Miss Elizabeth Cook, who is sometimes around on his recordings and such are Legendary local fixtures in Nashville. Mr. Boo Ray is an integral part of my local music community here, while at the same time he brings a little west coast flavor to his music.

PRE-ORDER

You can read about the Magnolia Roads summer party I covered Here, as they celebrated their anniversary. In my opinion he was one of the best sets on that entire show, and I am always really excited to see him in the future.

More often than not, I hear so many older people say we’re loosing all the good ones. I dont listen to music anymore because all of the real ones are gone. I reply with well Charley Pride put a new album out…crickets. They don’t respond with sales and attendance to shows, and that alone can lead to the detriment of Country Music. Actually they reply with WOW so and so is still alive I thought he died in whatever year they say.

One of Country Music’s more overlooked Legends is none other than Miss Lacy J Dalton, and right now she has a brand new EP out called Scarecrow. This album has four songs of edgey more Americana style of music, even though she pretty much cut her teeth on Country.

This is the official press release :

Dalton has surrounded herself with experienced musicians on this project, including bassist John Avila, also a renowned producer, composer, arranger, and vocalist whose credits include performing with Neil Young, Willie Nelson and Oingo Boingo, and drummer David Raven, who has recorded and toured with the likes of Keith Richards, Norah Jones, T-bone Burnett, Steve Earle, Shelby Lynne, and Lucinda Williams.

Lacy J. Dalton first hit the charts with “Crazy Blue Eyes” in 1979, followed by hits including “Takin’ It Easy,” “Black Coffee,” “Everybody Makes Mistakes” and her signature song, “16th Avenue” which was voted one of Country’s Top 100 Songs of all time by Billboard Magazine. Besides her charted hit songs, she has recorded duets with the likes of George Jones, Bobby Bare, Glen Campbell and more. She not only toured with Willie Nelson, she was the only female on his “Half Nelson” album, which also included duets with Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, Carlos Santana, Neil Young and more. The album went Platinum and Lacy received a gold record for her contribution.

“I’m loving how this musical journey continues,” says Dalton. “I think the title track of the new EP ‘Scarecrow’ is the best song ever produced on me. My good friend Reverend Barbara Ann Fletcher remarked to me ‘that song makes you a whole new you, and it makes me a whole new me,’ and I love that the way that song turned out can make someone feel that way.”

In early 2019, Lacy was pleasantly surprised to receive several awards from Strictly Country Magazine, including the President’s Choice award for best well written music for ‘Boundless Skies’ and the Pete Huttinger Award for Music Excellence for the CD ‘Last Wild Place Anthology.’

You know, much like young adults like Mr. Julian Davis, Mr. Billy Strings, and Miss Sierra Hull, the realm of Bluegrass has many exciting up and coming artists to quench even the thirstiest of palates. Miss
Molly Tuttle is no slouch when it comes to fresh originality and promise.

To be completely honest miss Molly is not EXACTLY new, she has indeed been around on various recordings in some magnitude. She released a small seven song EP called “Rise”, that recorded from a gofundme.

In 2018, she joined Alison Brown, Missy Raines, Sierra Hull, and Becky Buller in a supergroup. The quintet performed at the Rockygrass festival in Lyons Colorado on July 27, 2018. Initially known as the Julia Belles, the group later became known as the First Ladies of Bluegrass. Additional gigs were booked at Analog at the Hutton Hotel in Nashville on Sept 18, 2018 and the IBMA Wide Open Bluegrass Festival on September 28, 2018.

The First Ladies of Bluegrass are featured on the first single from a full length CD by Missy Raines titled Royal Traveler due out October 5, 2018 on Compass Records.

When You’re Ready, produced by Ryan Hewitt (the Avett Brothers, Lumineers), also features Jason Isbell on backing vocals and Sierra Hull in a guest spot on mandolin. The LP’s opening cut, “Million Miles,” is one Tuttle co-penned with Steve Poltz, who started writing the song in the Nineties with his one-time musical collaborator Jewel before the pair abandoned it.

When You’re Ready will be available on Compass Records April 5th.

Longtime Opry Band Member Mr. Jimmy Capps Releases His own Book.

News  Comments Off on Longtime Opry Band Member Mr. Jimmy Capps Releases His own Book.
Feb 022019

One of the many outlets of Country Music that I enjoy frequently studying is that of the musicians on the backside of the business, that the ordinary fan often neglects…the backup band. So often we forget to mention those that help make the mega stars shine as they often put their own signature sound to the vocals, like Mr. Don Rich and Mr. Roy Nichols did for the Bakersfield community.

I thoroughly enjoy reading about people like Mr. Tim Atwood and Mr. Hoot Hester, and now we can all read about his career as a session musician and backing guitarist from a career that spans  six decades. “The Man In Back” will share stories of working on songs like the Dallas Frazier mega hit “Elvira”, and one of Country Music’s most beloved songs. the George Jones hit “He Stopped Loving Her Today”.

He was celebrated in December during the Opry performance and also in his hometown of Benson North Carolina, may has been designated as Jimmy Capps Month. In 2014 he was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall Of Fame, and has accumulated many other accolades.  Currently he can be seen every week on RFD-TV’s Larry’s Country Diner as the guitar-playing “Sheriff,” and also on the Country’s Family Reunion shows.

“The Man in Back” also takes you inside the studio as Jimmy Capps played guitar on some of the most important songs in Country Music history including:

  • • Kenny Rogers – The Gambler
  • • Barbara Mandrell – I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool
  • • George Jones – He Stopped Loving Her Today
  • • Tammy Wynette – Stand By Your Man
  • • The Oak Ridge Boys – Elvira
  • • Ronnie Milsap – Smoky Mountain Rain
  • • Conway Twitty – The Rose
  • • George Strait – Amarillo By Morning

Country Music Legend Miss Loretta Lynn Plans Birthday Bash.

News  Comments Off on Country Music Legend Miss Loretta Lynn Plans Birthday Bash.
Feb 012019

Country Music Legend Miss Loretta Lynn, when it comes to that name, there isn’t much that already hasn’t been said. I mean let’s be honest here there are thousands of online publications that report on her,and they all say the same thing. Until just a while ago she and Mr. Ray Price were the oldest active Country artists in existence.

Once Mr. Ray Price made his entrance into Hillbilly Heaven and Miss Loretta suffered All of her recent health misfortunes their active status came to an end. Currently, she is not performing anymore but she said she misses it and plans a return.

However, this celebration will not be that return she insists will happen. No my friends this event will only consist of her friends singing her songs to her. Additionally, this show will not contain any duets either.  What this show WILL contain is classic Country hits that Miss Loretta made famous with a career that spans 5 decades, and will also include some of her new music from recent albums that in my opinion contain some of her finest work to date.

Her latest album entitled “Wouldn’t It Be Great” included the song of the same name that she wrote about her late husband Dolittle. As her husband was a well known drinker, and the subject of much of her frustration in her older classics, she never turned her back on him and stayed by his side until his passing.

Every song she wrote and sang for him she said he would always reply with honey, that’s a hit. Despite the fact some of her new albums contain remakes of her older songs, her new material shines brighter than ever before. Over here on this website she achieved many TOP 50 spots on my lists.

There are no other accolades this woman could possibly garner in her career and I am adamant that every performer there will be humbled to be performing whatever song they are given. This is going to be a celebration to Thank her for paving the road for so many in her respected genre.

April 1st, 2019 is the show date at the Bridgestone Arena, and you can get your tickets HERE.
