Miranda Lambert: What I Know About Wildcard.

2019 is shaping up to be one hell of a HOT year for many Country artists making not so Country albums. That’s ok with me because I feature MORE than just Country. I didn’t care for her first few albums, but I’ll tell you what I know about this new one.

“Mess With My Head” was written by Mr. Luke Dick and Miss Natalie Hemby of the new super group the Highwomen, which right now I am absolutely enjoying every aspect of. That album will be on my top ten right off the bat. She also wrote another song on the album called “Bluebird” with those two writers, and that song is more mid tempo.

Back to the subject of the Highwomen as I talk about her co write with Miss Maren Morris on the duet called “Way Too Pretty For Prison”, to be honest I’m not in any way a fan of Maren Morris solo music. In my opinion it’s terrible, but I wouldn’t hold it against anybody for liking it…that’s not what MY website is about. Find what you love and support it, finance it and attend shows…PLEASE.

I’m kind of thinking here that the Pistol Annies and Highwomen are inevitably going to be compare to each other in sort of a competition with other websites. I mean, let’s dwell on this here both bands have some TERRIFIC harmonies and possess members of impeccable songwriting abilities.

I was equally enthusiastic about the fact that she is bringing Mr. Cody Johnson with her on her arena tours, which will be bringing him into a bigger audience. I have a lot of respect for the bigger acts that help the smaller acts I love grow exponentially.

Album Feature – Billy Strings – Home

News  Comments Off on Album Feature – Billy Strings – Home
Sep 232019

By Joshua Wallace

Billy Strings is about to explode.  He’s already had an amazing 2019 selling out shows on his tour supporting this album and some amazing festival runs.  His music transcends bluegrass while keeping true to the roots of the genre. He is one of the best guitar pickers alive today and he’s got an amazing band that can keep up with him.  Home is his second studio album and it takes things to another level. There is more great songwriting, more longer jams that you can’t wait to hear live versions of and more lightning fast guitar picking.  This album certainly lives up to the hype.

The album kicks off with “Taking Water” which is one of the more traditional bluegrass tracks on the whole record.  I love the opening of the track with the use of John Mailander’s fiddle to create seagull sounds to help create the setting of the song.  I also dig the track “Running”. This one features some lightning fast picking and while it airs on the more traditional side, it sets the stage for things to come.  “Everything’s The Same” is another track in the same vein as “Running”. Super fast guitar licks here and I love the lyrics here about no matter where you go or what you do, everything’s the same.

There are two longer jam tracks on this album, the first of which is “Away From The Mire”.  The song starts off slow, but picks up pace after the first chorus and doesn’t let go. After the third chorus, the band goes into psychedelic overdrive with a solo that will knock you back a few feet.  When it is all said and done, it ties everything back together and refrains the first verse and chorus. It’s already a major hit live and I personally can’t wait to hear it myself. The second of the two longer jams is the title track “Home”.  This starts off with a very structured melody and some orchestral pieces sparsely sprinkled throughout. Like “Away From The Mire”, this track builds epicly to an amazing finale that is in my opinion, the best thing Billy Strings has put to record in this vein.  It keeps the orchestral element building while he incorporates electric guitar and a sound that is almost Santana inspired during the long solo. It’s really awesome and I cannot wait to hear this performed live.

Another favorite track is “Highway Hypnosis”.  It’s a hard driving bluegrass song about being on the road.  I love the mandolin solo from Jarrod Walker before the song breaks out into a psychedelic sound effect overload for a while before going back to the main tune.  It’s a great use of the trippy elements Billy has been incorporating on an otherwise traditional bluegrass tune.

The final two tracks on the album deliver something a bit different.  “Guitar Peace” is just over four minutes long and it’s a solo piece from Billy on his guitar.  It starts out slow, but builds and some psychedelic effects are thrown in as the pace picks up pace more and more.  It’s a great bit of very technical playing from Billy and I can’t wait to hear what he does with it in a live setting with improv.  Finally, the album closes with the most traditional tune on the record, a bluegrass gospel number called “Freedom”. It’s complete with harmonies from the entire band and ties the record back to it’s bluegrass roots.  Billy certainly isn’t a bluegrass traditionalist by any means, but he never forgets the sound that brought him to this point on this record.

With the release of Home, Billy Strings is set for bigger things.  He is already on tour supporting this record and many shows are sold out if not near selling out.  If that’s not a sign of the start of something huge, I don’t know what is. He’s making music that transcends bluegrass and he’s drawing crowds bigger than most modern bluegrass acts I have seen.  You can stay up to date on everything Billy Strings and pre-order this record at the band’s website.  Home comes out everywhere Friday September 27th.

Album Feature – Riley Green – Different ‘Round Here

By Joshua Wallace

The 90’s country throwback trend is in full swing and Riley Green’s debut full length release titled Different ‘Round Here will take you back for sure.  There is some good stuff here and if country radio sounded more like this overall, I might find myself tuning back in every now and then. Let’s take a deeper dive into this one and preview a few tracks.

The album kicks off with “There Was This Girl” which is pure 90’s throwback with the twangy guitars and fist pumping beat.  This one is pure rockin’ country made for your next backyard BBQ. I also dig “Same Old Song” which is about staying the same staying true even if you’re rich.  It’s a familiar theme, but with some good songwriting that makes it fresh. Speaking of good songwriting, look no further than “I Wish Grandpas Never Died”. I love the shoutout to Steve Earle’s “Copperhead Road” in the lyrics.

“Bettin’ Man” is a tune that starts off with some chugging guitars and a slow backbeat before turning up the twang on a song that is a clever break-up tune. I dig this one and it’s a song that would be a #1 hit in the 90’s.  Finally, another song that would be a hit in the 90’s is “Get That Man A Beer”. It’s another clever break-up song where Riley wants to get the man who stole his girl a beer because he did him a favor. It’s another great piece of songwriting on this album full of potential hits.

Riley Green’s Different ‘Round Here is another in a long line of great debut country albums that have come out in 2019.  He has released a steady stream of EPs and singles for a few years now, and some of these tracks were on those releases, but this album works as a whole much better.  Riley Green is currently on the Get That Man A Beer Tour and dates can be found at his website.  Different ‘Round Here is streaming everywhere as of Friday September 20th, 2019.

What’s Dwight Yoakam Up To?

News  Comments Off on What’s Dwight Yoakam Up To?
Sep 192019

Mr. Dwight Yoakam is well on his way to becoming a Country Music Legend if he isn’t already there now. However this year and next year he will become something else, a teacher. He has always been an integral part of what is left of the Bakersfield Sound, that famed West Coast version of Country Music that still exists today in sporadic bands across the California and Arizona local scene.

I have been a HUGE FAN of Mr. Dwight Yoakam now since I was kid growing up in the 80’s, with my favorite album being “If There Was A Way”. In my opinion that album is stuffed full of obscure B side songs that if you REALLY LISTEN make that album an iconic one.

This man took it upon himself to bring Country Legend  Mr. Buck Owens back into the limelight by recording his own version of the Homer Joy classic “Streets Of Bakersfield”, and included him on the video and song, thus bringing him back out into a whole new audience of fans.

This residency brings eager fans closer to the famed style of music that is relentlessly studied by many, and snubbed by others, in many ways. What I find completely extraordinary about this project is how thorough and in depth it is, for being so quickly drafted into form. Here is how YOU can take part in the performance if you live in the area, or choose to travel there.

Dwight Yoakam Tour Admat

08.20.19

Dwight Yoakam has sold 25 million albums worldwide, and now this GRAMMY-winning entertainment icon will make his Wynn Las Vegas debut with a six-night residency, An Evening with Dwight Yoakam & The Bakersfield Beat, at the Encore Theater. Guests can expect to take a journey with songs, sights, and stories through California country music’s dramatic arrival and lasting impact on American pop music cultureWednesday, Dec. 4 – Saturday, Dec. 14.

Beginning with the Dust Bowl Era, Yoakam will take the audience on a musical excursion exploring the history of the sounds associated with Bakersfield, Calif. through songs and storytelling in this exclusive residency. Yoakam will perform a variety of the music that influenced and created the “Bakersfield” and “California Country-Rock” genres of country music from their early beginnings to their commercial zenith, in addition to his own original music that was shaped and influenced by this legacy. The unique showcase will reflect the concepts that created his self-curated SiriusXM channel, Dwight Yoakam & The Bakersfield Beat. These and other influences have inspired Yoakam throughout his career, highlighted by 12 gold albums, nine platinum or multi-platinum albums, and nearly 40 singles on the Billboard charts. And now Yoakam brings his dual mastery of songwriting and storytelling to the Encore Theater, weaving a musical journey audiences are sure to remember.

One of my personal favorite one man bands is defiantly Mr. Scott H Biram AKA The Dirty Ol One Man Band. He’s been blazing local music trails doing his thing for MANY years. I have not had the chance to cover him in 2019 sadly, however I caught up with his people and they sent me some information to bring you up to date on what he is up to.

I’ve got some exciting dates coming up and some exciting news about some new and upcoming releases!

We released the Scott H. Biram/Jesse Dayton 7” last month on Bloodshot Records. If you want to hear some cuts of me playing with a full band, pick one up at www.scottbiram.com or www.bloodshotrecords.com!

Biram Dayton

OUT NOW! Scott H. Biram & Jesse Dayton “Monkey David Wine/Single Again” limited edition 7″ single!

Two Texas Guitar Outcasts on one killer 7” single!

Limited to 500 copies. Includes digital download.

Ground Zero outlaw David Allan Coe’s “Monkey David Wine” gets a sinister gut bucket blues duet treatment. It lands about 11 feet away from Screamin’ Jay Hawkins on a ten foot chain. Pass the bottle, friends.

Side B is Gary Stewart’s “Single Again.” The cool-as-can-be song is a shaggy-haired, floppy-hatted prime taste of 70’s rebel country. Pass the weed, brother

Also Bloodshot will be releasing a special compilation of select Rev. Scott H. Biram Gospel recordings on 12” vinyl later this year, including some previously unreleased material! Keep an eye out for that!

I’m also just finishing up the final tracks of my next full-length album which should be released in early 2020! Thankfully, I’ve already got songs lining up for the one after that too!! At home in Hiram’s Hell Hole….I’m just finishing up some tracks for my next full length album. It should be out early next year! I’m pretty stoked about this one! It’s a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, and a little bit of “file under other.”

October, we’re bringing our Scott H. Biram/Goddamn Gallows/Urban Pioneers Tour out west!..and in November I’m back for more Free & Early Shows at C-Boys Heart & Soul on Thursdays in Austin, TX!!

We had so much fun with our buddies The Goddamn Gallows last April, that we’re bustin’ this thing out again on The West Coast in September and October! Y’all get ready for a real good time! Just like the carnival we provided for the eastern half of the US back in April, each band will be doing their own full length sets. Most nights we all end up on stage together for a few songs, and it’s a total blast!

This is a CO-HEADLINE SHB/GDG TOUR!

I just got back from a long tour in Europe. It was great! Thanks to everyone who came out and a special thanks to the thousands of people who stood up and rocked for my set at Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival. Everybody was sitting all day. When I started my first song, a few thousand people stood up, came to the stage and started rocking! What a trip at the brain! That’s twice this has happened at this festival. I’ll be back for sure! Now I’m bringing it back to the States! Check out the dates!!

Lastly, toward the end of the year, I’ll be doing some dates with The Dead South in November/December.

Please keep an eye on scottbiram.com for tour updates.

Album Feature – Vincent Neil Emerson – Fried Chicken & Evil Women

By Joshua Wallace

If you want an album that is 100% Grade A certified classic country in 2019, look no further than Vincent Neil Emerson’s debut record called Fried Chicken & Evil Women.  This record hits all the notes of what you would want in a classic country album. Smooth country crooning, nice pedal steel, honky tonk piano, it’s all there. This 27 year old from East Texas has put together the complete package.  There isn’t a bad track on this record. Let’s take a dive into it.

The first highlight here is a great piece of song writing called “Willie Nelson’s Wall”.  It starts out with an amazing pedal steel riff and I love the opening line “I’m as high as a fly on Willie Nelson’s wall”.  It’s a great upbeat song about being high. Another highlight is the title track “Fried Chicken & Evil Women”. The pedal steel and honky tonk guitar are thick on this track, as it is on most of this album.

“Dade County Jail” starts off with some piano chords that will make you think you’re back in church.  But in reality, the song is a slow blues track about waking up in jail. I love the acoustic guitar solo on this one.  Some really good songwriting here. Finally, “Highway Shine” kicks off with some simple acoustic picking and great crooning from Vincent till the full band kicks in.  It’s a smooth track about wanderlust that closes out the album. There’s some more great solo work on this track and I love the shout out to Billy Joe Shaver.

Vincent Neil Emerson has released an impressive debut album with Fried Chicken & Evil Women.  In fact, this is one of the most country albums you will find in 2019. The playing and songwriting are top notch throughout and I cannot wait to see where this takes Vincent.  I hope to be able to see him live one day. Fried Chicken & Evil Women is available everywhere you can find good country music as of Friday September 13th, 2019.

Album Feature – Ottoman Turks – Ottoman Turks

By Joshua Wallace

I first heard about this band through Joshua Ray Walker whose Wish You Were Here record is still in my heavy rotation after reviewing it back in January.  He is actually the lead guitarist of this country and rock n roll outfit called Ottoman Turks. The rest of this Dallas, TX band is rounded out by Nathan Wells on rhythm guitar and vocals, Paul Hinojo on drums and Billy Law on bass and vocals.  This is one record you’re going to want to go out of your way to check out, here is why.

The album kicks off with a mid tempo number called “Apathy”.  It features Joshua Ray Walker’s slide guitar through the track and it’s a funky mid tempo that is a mix of the fuzzy rock and country music you can expect from the rest of the album.  The next two tracks dig into the yin and yang of this album. “Snake Song” is a fuzzy punk influenced rocker. I really dig Joshua Ray Walker’s solo work on this one and the smooth bass groove that the track strips down to for the last verse.  On the other hand, “Glass Bottles” is a classic country drinking anthem. From it’s sing-along chorus to the twangy guitar work on this track. I dig it.

The track “Red” is a slow almost heavy blues number with growly vocals from Nathan Wells.  As the track kicks into full gear, it morphs into a stoner rock sound that just gets faster and heavier as it goes.  This is one of the heavier tracks on the album. “Beer & Women” brings back some country vibes to the proceedings while still keeping the twangy guitars distorted.  It mixes the two sides of this band quite well in a track that maybe somewhat still leans to country.

This band does a great job of blending their heavy rock influences and their country influences into one cohesive sound.  I can only imagine how crazy the energy at a live show gets and hope to see them live at some point in the future. If you want to check this album out, it is available everywhere you can stream music as of August 23rd, 2019 and I’m sure the band still has some physical copies at live shows.

I featured this young man several years ago, and he impressed me back then. He has some powerhouse people working on his albums all of the time, and whenever he comes around to my area here I’m always sure to stop and see him do his thing.

Recently he got into podcasting and he has some of my own heroes on this program, I’ll be delving into this podcast VERY soon and include it into my own podcast rotation for personal studies. You can listen, stream and share them on THIS LINK.

It has been a very busy year playing out all over Texas and Colorado. And I am also hosting a new podcast in which I interview musicians! We’ll be building a great audience thanks to shares on YouTube and on Cowboys & Indians Magazine’s website, Blog and Facebook.

I’ve been having an awesome time creating some fine podcasts and videos with such greats as Charlie Daniels, Randy Rogers, Jim Lauderdale, Hayes Carll, Hall of Fame writers David Lee & Josh Grider, and Riders In The Sky.

It was such an honor to do an episode on legendary multi-Grammy winning Country Western Band “Riders In The Sky” . The interview was recorded on the grounds of the majestic Bar DChuckwagon Ranch in SW Colorado. Many have aptly called the band a “National Treasure”.

Ty, Ranger Doug & Too Slim

Bar D Wrangler Gary Cook, Too Slim, Ranger Doug, Jeff Taylor and Woody Paul

I really enjoyed singing a song with my mentor, Bar D Wrangler and National Guitar Champ Gary Cook, Too Slim, Ranger Doug, Wrangler John Moore, & hiding behind the CDs is Woody on great Fiddle.

The Muddy Roots Whiskey Train Rolls Out This Saturday.

It’s NO secret to any of my readers I am VERY CLOSE to the people that operate Muddy Roots. I mean if you ask me from the heart what Muddy roots REALLY MEANS to me well, I’ll tell you and I’m going to repeat this in my other article for Muddy Roots main festival coming soon.

I have been a member of the Muddy family for ten years now, hell, they been better to me than my OWN family. having been adopted and never really meeting own mother, I can easily say that. In that decade of festivals Mr. Jason has derocinated so many bands from the Roots Music genre, and brought them into a larger audience and THAT IS WHY I LOVE HIM from a professional level.

I mean HOW MANY BANDS have I featured on here because of people like him and his crew of people? TONS! Many of the bands I already knew about and some he taught me about, because I cared enough to open my mind up and find them for myself.  I have met countless friends for life out there in that field, been to weddings and witnessed babies being born…breakups and relationships within the community…I got to see them all.

I get hugged more during Muddy Roots than anytime of the year. Recently Mr. jason started the vintage wine tasting train ride through Tennessee This Americana Roots, Whiskey & Wine Train is Saturday. 11am-5pm. Tons of bands like John r Miller, as Thompson, farmer and Adele, Todd day wait, Tim Bolo

Tastings include Bib & Tucker Bourbon, Tennessee Legend Distillery, Little Harpeth Brewery, and Beechaven Winery. All Tennessee brands.

Tim Bolo
Todd Day Wait’s Pigpen
Allen Thompson

The Farmer And Adelle

PRE-ORDER HERE

I am absolutely AMAZED by Whiskey Myers stage shows, and trust me I have been around them many times. My last encounter with them was this past summer during Tumbleweed in Kansas City, where they played a few songs from their forthcoming self titled fifth album to be out September 27th.

The first single they released was called “Die Rockin” and was exclusively released by Rolling Stone:

“I wrote Die Rockin’ with the legendary Ray Wylie Hubbard [writer of the beer-stained classic Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother], and it really sums up this rock ‘n’ roll life of ours,” says frontman Cody Cannon “We’re consumed by music and are such fans of the legends that came before us.

“We’re out there on the road and in the studio trying to pay homage to those greats that have inspired this generation while we strive to create some magic of our own.”

Now, the reason it’s self titled is because this album is totally produced by the band themselves and the band wrote and co wrote every song on this album overall. I’m listening now on Spotify to “Houston County Sky”, which is adorned with a sweet sounding steel guitar and has a nice Red Dirt flavor to it. I’m VERY hopeful for this album overall, and I’m sure Mr. Joshua already has it for review.

This new album includes other co writers than Mr. Ray Wylie Hubbard including Mr. Brent Cobb on “Running”, Mr. Adam Hood on the song “Rolling Stone” and Tn Jet on the song “Bury My Bones”.  It’s really crazy how many of these bands are collaborating on each other’s albums just like many of our favorite Country Music Legends did years ago.

Whiskey Myers will have a cameo on the new Paramount Network TV series “Yellowstone” starring Kevin Costner. The bands music will be featured in 4 episodes of the series first season. The Paramount Network will also do an exclusive recap video using the Whiskey Myers song “Stone.” The recap will air on VH1’s top 20 countdown.

Tennessee Jet And The Steel Woods In The Caverns.

News  Comments Off on Tennessee Jet And The Steel Woods In The Caverns.
Sep 112019

Down in the ground, where they film the popular show Bluegrass Underground I recently ventured out to Pelham Tennessee to see these two play this venue for the very first time ever. I have always wanted to get down to this venue to see music, and I have just never had the time or the means to get down there. I’ll be making some new articles about this venue in the next few weeks for the upcoming season of the show.

Before I elaborate on the bands, and what was played, I wanted to talk about the ambiance and initial vibe of this place. They take you on a bus trip down this steep hill deep in the woods. You check into the bag check area and then you get to walk down into the cave area, where the merchandise and beer is sold.

The acoustics and the sounds down here are second to none. I mean, folks it is truly something you need to experience for yourself one Time. This place is deep deep in the middle of nowhere and very secluded for such a popular concert hall. They have it a nice cool 60 degrees and when I went it was hot and muggy all day, you can feel the difference in temperature as you defend into the main area.

This is one of the most vivid and surreal experiences you’ll ever see next to Red Rocks, because it is outdoor and indoor both at one time. The only complaint I have was the talking, during the first half of the opening act there were many that just wouldn’t shut up the damn talking so we could hear. In fact, the first act declared during the first song I recognized that it was a song for veterans and to please be more quiet. I realize that no matter what people are NOT going SHUT IT during concerts, the only thing is….YOU’RE IN A CAVE AND IT IS LOUD.

Tennessee Jet was first tonight, and he played some new songs with just his acoustic guitar and a steel player for the first half of his set. accompanied by the overall vibe of the caverns this portion of his set was my favorite. The ONLY drawback was my previously mentioned complaint…that damn talking. It was ridiculous and shameful the way many of these groups of people acted like they were in a restaurant or place where conversation is to be expected.

At the juncture where he played his newly released single called “Never Forget” which addresses veterans and their PTSD and other conditions, he stated out loud that if there was ANY SONG he played where he could have total silence it needed to be this one.

And justifiably so, because this song is very important especially as I write this article on 9-11. When he announces new plans for future recordings you can damn sure bet I’ll be around to report on them. He has a very unique ability to deracinate his sound form so many other influences and genres, that he has culminated his own style that defies all other genres.

He played the song “Lifers” that he wrote with Mr. Cody Jinks, and was on his latest album, however in the VERY near future Mr. Cody Jinks will be relasing TWO NEW ALBUMS before the year is over with. Before he switched over to his electric guitar and one arm drum technique that he does, this was his last more country sounding song.

He reverted back to his more familiar sound to me with songs like “What Kind Of Man” and “Hwy 51 Blues”. In these few years I have been watching his local shows around the nation, I have truly witnessed a lot of growth in his stage presence overall, and after playing “Dead Belles And Bones” he unleashed a powerful version of “I Saw The Light”.

The Steel Woods are one of the FEW bands I like with only two albums out that can pull off covers on them. Both of their albums are chocked full of covers indeed, but they have gathered a HUGE gathering, and played the Opry a few times. They PACKED the Caverns tonight, and when Mr. Jay sounded off on the kick drum it resonated off the walls like thunder.

I’m not even sure if i need to introduce these gentlemen on any future articles, most of you know who they are and trust me Mr. Rowdy Cope and company brought it tonight under the ground, and I’m SURE they will asked to return one day soon. They opened with a rousing roar from the audience as they came out to their background music and went into “The Rock That Says My Name”, a great song about a grave digger.

“Wild And Blue” was next followed by “All Of These Years”, which sounded GREAT down here, the thumping bass and pounding guitar riffs just ripped down the walls. The water gets melted and drips down onto your head no matter where you stand in this cave, and YES there ARE bats. One suggestion is to wear rubber muck boots because the floor gets muddy later in the evening.

“Without You” and “Blind Lover” were next followed by a selection called “I’m Gonna Love You” from the debut album called Straw In The Wind.  One of my personal favorites was “Uncle Lloyd” which was about a family friend that had a family issue because of his drinking. In the song he loses his wife to a divorce and deals with it by the bottle, and told through the eyes of a child. it is truly a poignant and dark song of loss, and lonesomeness.

“Whatever It Means To You” was followed by their rousing cover of “Are The Good Times Really Over” by the great Mr. Merle Haggard, from the 1981 Big City album. “Better In The Fall” was next and then they played their LONG version of “Whipping Post” as usual full of flaming guitar licks.

“Old News” contains one of the most powerful lines in a song I have heard all year ” Here’s to miss liberty, and the crack in her bell. There’s a tear in her eye, but her arm hasn’t fell.”. That line moves me greatly, also “Jezebel” was included in this set. “Hole In The Sky” and title track from their debut album called “Straw In The Wind” was there.

Typically, they have played one encore all the many times I have seen them, tonight they played TWO. They were “Axe” and finally “Let The Rain Come Down”. This small band that started out as a jam band opening for people like Mr. Whitey Morgan and his ilk has grown a HUGE following and STILL has not even come CLOSE to their potential apogee of popularity…with little to NO radio airplay. You know I’m in the process of writing an Opry article about how all of these acts with NO airplay are selling out shows and KILLING SALES for nationwide venues…MORE TO COME FOLKS!

SHARE THIS BAND and tell your friends about this band GROW THE WOODS!

Album Feature – Zach Bryan – DeAnn

By Joshua Wallace

I discover new artists in a lot of different ways these days.  I first discovered Zach Bryan from a tweet from Parker McCollum. It read  : “Sitting at a bar in Nashville with my agent telling him about this Zach Bryan kid…. “fucking sign him… just trust me””.  That was a ringing endorsement if I ever saw one. So I looked him up. I didn’t find much. No website, no promotional Facebook page.  Just a personal Facebook, a Twitter account and some YouTube performance videos. Then I found this album DeAnn. It just came out on August 24th, 2019 but the numbers on Spotify are what got me.  His songs are climbing to over 100k listeners fast and as of this writing he’s got 41,759 monthly listeners. That is impressive for a Spotify account that didn’t even have music 2 weeks ago. So what is it about this album that is drawing people in? Let’s take a deeper dive and find out.

The first highlight of this album is “God Speed”.  It’s a song looking inward at Zach’s wants and needs from love, life and everything between.  It’s a great song that sends the message that no matter what you want in life, you’re moving at God’s speed and “Only God and my mama know what I need”.  Another favorite is “Doing Fine” which is a well written track where Zach laments about people he used to know and places he used to go. Songs like this live on the imagery and descriptions and Zach does a good job of painting a picture and taking you back. Whether it’s people he let down or good times he had, this song takes you there.

“Shivers Down Spines” is a great love song on this record.  This is one of the songs where Zach gets to showcase some of his range in both vocal ability and songwriting.  He can be intimate when the song calls for it. I also love the sudden stop at the end of this one as it’s done to a great affect with the song.  Another great love song on this record is “Moon In Oklahoma”. This is another track where the imagery shines. Zach’s lyrics paint a picture that takes you back to scenes from his past.

I could say something about every song on this record, but it’s worth it to seek this one out and listen.  It is raw, rough around the edges and straight up acoustic. Just a man and his guitar. Zach even kept the outtakes like the fit of laughter that ends Condemned.  Zach Bryan shows some skills here and while there is room for improvement, this is a very impressive record for a debut. I cannot wait to hear more from this young man.  He currently does not have much social media presence, or even a website, but you can find his music on Spotify, Amazon, iTunes and other digital services. I highly recommend seeking this record out.  It is available as of August 24th, 2019.

We recently received album art work, track listing and pre-order info for the album that Cody Jinks teased as dropping October 11th titled After The Fire.  The suspicious thing with this release is that, there was no pre-release single to hype up the release.  That is until last night.

A new song called “Same Kind Of Crazy As Me” came up on digital music services as a new single.  However, fans were quick to realize that this is not on the track listing for After The Fire and the art work is a bit different as well.

Today, we might have a bit more clarity.  A listing is now up on Amazon for a second album called The Wanting to be released on October 18th, 2019.

You might notice, the art work between the new single and this new album cover for The Wanting match up.  This raises speculation….is Cody Jinks releasing 2 albums in October?

Cody Jinks has always said things would be done a bit differently with this album cycle.  Releasing 2 records in such a short period is certainly different.

This story is developing and we will have more information on this as it breaks.

Update :

Thanks to some very resourceful Flockers, we now have a track listing for The Wanting from Amazon.uk

  1. The Wanting
  2. Same Kind Of Crazy As Me
  3. Never Alone Always Lonely
  4. Whiskey
  5. Where Even Angels Fear To Fly
  6. Which One I Feed
  7. A Bite Of Something Sweet

  9. It Don’t Rain In California
  10. Wounded Mind

  12. The Raven And The Dove

Update # 2:

You would think that if Cody Jinks made a post on social media, it would be about this….you’d be wrong.

Yet another album on the way?

Update #3 :

It appears as though the Amazon.com listing for The Wanting has been removed.  The UK listing is still up as of this writing.

Album Feature – Paul Cauthen – Room 41

News  Comments Off on Album Feature – Paul Cauthen – Room 41
Sep 052019

By Joshua Wallace

Paul Cauthen burst onto the scene with his 2016 debut My Gospel.  That album showcased an amazing baritone singer with incredible vibrato and a knack for laying down funky country tracks that would make Jerry Reed dance in his grave.  In 2018 he released the Have Mercy EP which reinforced the country funk sound with tracks like “Resignation”. Now in 2019, he is back with Room 41, a record that expands on the country funk sound that Cauthen is known for.

The album kicks off with “Holy Ghost Fire”, which is a funky track that really sets the stage for the rest of the record.  It’s a hot track with foot stompin’ beat that will get the body moving. I dig how the track builds till the fire electric guitar solo at the end.  Another hot one is “Cocaine Country Dancing”. That one just starts off funky and doesn’t let go. The riff that starts with the bass line and builds throughout the track is straight fire.  It’s a simple song that brings back memories of “Saddle” from My Gospel, and that’s a good thing.

“Slow Down” does just that and slows down the proceedings a bit.  This track focuses more on Cauthen’s vocals and his amazing vibrato.  I dig the use of the trippy sound effects throughout this track. It keeps the proceedings funky, even on this slower track.  Another favorite is the track “Big Velvet”. This track is Cauthen looking at all of the indulgent stuff he has done in the past and putting it on a character called Big Velvet that he morphs into when things get crazy.  The bass line on this track is one of the funkiest things I’ve heard this side of the 70’s and the groove is heavy and deep, just like Cauthen’s baritone vocals that almost stretch to bass notes on this track.

Another super funky track is “Freak”.  It’s a synth heavy track that pulls from R&B influences.  I know in the past, this hasn’t necessarily worked for other artists, but Cauthen and his production team make it work on this record.  It’s another track that revels in self indulgence and acknowledges that we’re all freaks in some way. Finally, “Give ‘Em Peace” takes things back to the subject of faith that Cauthen has explored in the past.  I really love the opening lines and how it’s a different feel from the rest of the track. It’s a funky gospel inspired number that slowly builds to a crescendo with an amazing solo.

This album is a great second LP from Cauthen that builds on the foundations he laid down on My Gospel.  Cauthen has found the right kind of groove to keep everyone moving. Whether you’re here for the funky bass lines, grooves that are fun to dance to or his amazing vibrato, Paul Cauthen brings the full package.  I highly recommend checking this one out tomorrow when it drops everywhere you can find good music. Paul Cauthen is about to hit the road supporting Randy Houser on his Magnolia Tour. I highly recommend checking out one of those shows if you can.
