“Bill Monroe Music Park and Campground” is dedicated to continuing to be cautious and protecting the wellbeing of their campers and guests during the upcoming campout. Some of the highlights include:
A safe 10’ barrier will be around the stage.
Wearing a face mask is highly recommended when near others not in your group even though the state of Indiana mask mandate has been lifted.
Wearing a face mask is important in these areas: restrooms, food vending, jam circles and any indoor area, making everyone feel more comfortable.
Allow for social distancing when choosing your seating area in the concert area. Please do not sit in chairs belonging to others or leave items unattended.
Chairs will need to be removed each night from the concert area.
There will be designated golf cart parking.
Pavilion will be designated as eating only.
No smoking or vaping in the designated concert area.
Most of all, please be kind and courteous, we are all in this together and want to have the best campout experience for everyone. We look forward to seeing everyone gather at the park this year.

Our wonderful founder and visionary, John Hotze passed away March 29th, 2021. John stuck his neck out and created a unique gathering of kindred souls dedicated to preserving the music and legacy of his lifelong friend and our festival namesake, John Hartford. The John Hartford Memorial Festival is this gathering and the fulfillment of John Hotze’s vision. So let’s talk for a bit about this scaled back lineup they have here to accommodate the health guidelines for 2021. I’m sure every festival will indeed be back to normal next year, each one of them offering mammoth lineups spanning 3 and 4 days. Until that time, I think we are more than lucky to get smaller lineups…. here’s why.
Smaller lineups equal more relaxed band time and stage time for tech problems. You may not realize this yet, but outdoor festivals can be an absolute debacle for sound techs and stagehands. You start mixing mud and water with loose cords and wet wood…you get a MESS….especially on day 3 or 4.
You got so many people in HOT, cramped tents swapping in and out gear and you have an outdoor festival! Smaller lineups will equal smaller and smoother changeups, and the band can spend more time being intimate with their audience.
Well, none of that is going to be the case this year, as this will be more of a campout than a festival, and it was culminated by the fans making donations to make it happen.

The bands involved on this bill are all equally amazing in their own right. I’ll start with one of Roots music’s older bands The Tillers, whom recorded an iconic album called Farewell To The Historic Southgate House. Their 2010 album “By The Signs” is on my TOP 100 Roots Albums Of All Time, and this Ohio based outfit have been friends of mine for many years.
The Henhouse Prowlers are currently out playing a string of shows to support their new album called “The Departure”. This quartet is a Bluegrass powerhouse, having over 15 years in operation, and an endearing respect from their peers in the music community.
The Hammer And The Hatchet is an Indiana based duo that released a TERRIFIC album in 2020. I have had the pleasure of seeing them play on quite a few music functions, like one of the previous Hagfests at the aforementioned Southgate House Revival.
