Jason James has finally released the follow up to his highly acclaimed 2016 self titled debut album. This record is called Seems Like Tears Ago and it is once again one of the most traditional country albums you will find this year. You will hear him channeling the likes of George Jones and others throughout this great throwback record. Lets dig into a few tracks on this one.
The album kicks off with the title track “Seems Like Tears Ago”. This one would fit right in with your classic George Jones playlist. The pedal steel on this track is perfect along with the fiddle. Another favorite is “Move A Little Closer” which brings in the twangy guitar on a faster track that changes things up a bit for this album. I love the solo that plays between the fiddle and guitar on this track. “We’re Gonna Honky Tonk Tonight” is a song that reminds me of the songs like Hank Sr.’s “Setting The Woods On Fire” celebrating the old tradition of going honky tonkin with your favorite girl. Finally, “Cry On The Bayou” also harkens back to a Hank Williams classic in “Jambalaya (On the Bayou)”. This is an original with some lyrical allusions to the Hank Sr. classic. I really love how Jason James pays tribute to those that came before him and inspired his style heavily on this record.
Jason James is quickly becoming a huge name when it comes to traditional country music in these modern times. Seems Like Tears Ago is just another example of classic execution of styles of country music that you don’t always hear in their purest forms. This album is available everywhere you can find good music as of October 4th, 2019.
