Explore Yellow Creek Park

Beyond the music: Yellow Creek Park offers many activities for all age groups. Located in the park is a softball field, disc-golf course, tennis courts, and basketball courts. Along with these, there are spots for fishing as well as picnic shelters to cool off during the heat. The park also provides an idyllic nature trail stretching farther than two miles appealing to those who enjoy peaceful hikes and great scenery. Yellow Creek is very kid-friendly and includes a spray park and play ground for children, as well as playing home to the Western Kentucky Raptor Rescue Center and the ROMP mascot, Hootie.

ROMP Festival: Celebrating the Roots & Branches of Bluegrass

Hosted by the Bluegrass Music Museum & Hall of Fame

Celebrating its 16th year, ROMP Festival will return to Owensboro’s Yellow Creek Park. Headlining the initial lineup release are Hall of Fame members Ricky Skaggs and Del McCoury.  Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder will feature special guest Patty Loveless.  Also appearing are bluegrass/folk-rock favorites Trampled by Turtles and Americana music icon, Steve Earle & The Dukes.  Rounding out the initial release are Rhonda Vincent and The Rage, The Wood Brothers, Billy Strings, the Jeff Austin Band along with The Travelin’ McCourys performing The Grateful Ball, and Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers.  More artists to be announced soon.

Daviess County’s Yellow Creek Park, a 150-acre facility famous for its nature trails, winding creek and fishing lake, and sweeping tree-lines, plays host to ROMP each year.

A full line-up of artist-led instrument workshops takes place throughout the day, as ROMP artists interact with fans and players of all ages and skill levels. Other workshops and forums include songwriting, clogging and flat-foot dancing, yoga (all levels), and bluegrass jamming 101.

Additional offerings at ROMP Festival include organic and farm-to-table food vendors, craft vendors featuring Kentucky Proud products, art installations and professionally-led children’s activities.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam throughout the weekend, as well as dance the night away at the late night stage, featuring nationally acclaimed acts in the park’s rustic Pioneer Village.

Artist additions, single day tickets, vendor applications and daily schedules will be available in 2018. To stay up-to-date with the latest news from ROMP fest, visit rompfest.com, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and sign-up to become a ROMP insider.

You have saw it on my sidebar for many weeks now the advertising for the GREAT lineup out there in Asheville North Carolina for the 22nd annual Bluegrass First Class hosted by Festival Director Mr. Milton Harkey and his organization that is fiercely dedicated to the proliferation and promotion of Bluegrass music in all forms. He is by all means one of the modern day pioneers of his craft in many ways:

  • One of the founding fathers of the IBMA (June, 1985) and Chairman of the Board for 3 years.
  • Originator, founder and producer of The Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver Family Style Bluegrass Festival in Denton, NC (for 17 years)
  • Founder and host of the Pizza Hut International Bluegrass showdown, a talent search for bluegrass and acoustic bands throughout the US and Canada. Pizza Hut was the Title Sponsor.
  • Founding member of the South Carolina Bluegrass Society, Inc and Chairman of the Board for 3 years.
  • Producer of several bluegrass festivals: Fox on the Run Bluegrass Festival in Lexington, Little Mountain, SC, founder of the Kinston Winter Bluegrass Festival in Kinston, NC in conjunction with the Eastern North Carolina Bluegrass Association.
  • Disk jockey for 1 year with a 3 hour weekly show at WCOS-FM Radio, a 100,000 watt station located in Columbia, SC.
  • Event producer at the Quarter Moon Listening Parlor in Columbia, SC.
  • Harkey continues to spend his spare time working with young bluegrass artists by providing the opportunity to showcase their talents and achieve the recognition of seasoned bluegrass audiences nationwide.

On Feb 17,18 and 19th at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Asheville North Carolina you will find this stellar lineup of GREAT Bluegrass music to entertain you in fine fashion. I can tell you previous experience that Asheville North Carolina is a gorgeous area. And the initial hotel that is hosting this event includes the ENTIRE HOTEL, this from their website:

There will be pickin’ around the clock in the halls, rooms, lounge, sunken lobby, and foyer. The entire hotel is reserved for bluegrass fans and performers – It’s all yours, so just have at it! There is one quiet wing in the hotel and in that area we respectfully request that there be no jammin’.

It’s time now to delve into the wonderful world of an often overlooked genre of music…..Bluegrass. Often times when the general public doesn’t even have a clue about bands like Seldom Scene or who Del McCoury is I always commiserate with them. Often times they part ways with me with a better grasp of a decades old format of music, and if you tried to sit and analyze precisely WHEN it birthed you would have to ponder for a long time. You probably wouldn’t be able to firmly decide on what to report on the when and where it started, it wouldn’t surprise me if a damn triceratops was buck dancing to the Fruit Jar Drinkers.

Americana bands and String Bands also adorn the stage down here in a place called Bluegrass Underground which to someone like me is an automatic way to generate goosebumps on my arms. You see folks if you go out to East Tennessee toward the majestic Nickajack and Lookout Mountain you will tarry through McMinnville Tennessee. Folks, you KNOW ME and I love to incorporate music jobs with eating so if you are ever in that area you MUST STOP at Jim Oliver’s Smokehouse for a buffet that you will not believe your eyes or your stomach. Within those walls exist a Charlie and Ira Louvin museum complete with artifacts that are sure to compliment your thirst for knowledge like I have.

It is there a whopping 333 feet down inside of a mountain  that PBS airs a television series that began in 2011 and 36 episodes exist today. This show is broadcast from the confines of  the Volcano Room which is a subterranean amphitheater 333 feet below Mcminnville at the historic Cumberland Caverns. This program celebrates many genres of music from Bluegrass to String Bands and Americana. The acoustics within this theater are unlike any in the southern United States and more importantly the entire country, I assure you there is nothing like it anywhere.

Just recently they announced their entire lineup for filming their seventh season of taping for PBS on March 24th,25th and 26th 2017 and I have that lineup here folks:
* NOTE the complete schedule lineup after this one is NOT being filmed.
* You can purchase tickets to attend the LIVE filmed season on January 14th at 11AM.
