PRESTONSBURG, Ky. \u2014 Like many other musicians during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Nicholas Jamerson is taking his shows online following the cancellation\/postponement of his remaining March and April tour dates.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Following impromptu live streams on his official Facebook page in recent days, it was announced last Friday that the artist would also be performing during the Master Musicians’ Social Distance Fest<\/a>\u2014a collaboration between Lexington indie rock group Buck the Taxidermist, music club The Burl and the Somerset, Ky. based Master Musicians Festival\u2014on Sunday, March 29, from 7-8 p.m. Also performing during the week-long virtual festival taking place from March 23-29 will be Sumbuck (the solo project of Taylor Meier of CAAMP) along with Ben Sollee, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Blackfoot Gypsies, Mikaela Davis and Brother Smith, among others.<\/div>\n

Recently, Kentucky Country Music shared “Ride,” the first single from Jamerson’s new album The Wild Frontier (Available now for pre-order via Apple Music<\/a> and BandCamp<\/a>) out April 20 via The Bingo Shack. Listen\/share “Ride” HERE<\/a>.<\/div>\n

\u201cRide” is a lonesome tale that introduces listeners to Will of The Wild Frontier, the album’s primary protagonist who in the song is fighting off notions of laziness and complacency by beginning his journey to pursue his heart\u2019s biggest dreams (\u201cStraight into the sun is a good place to start \/ It’s amazing what’s created when you follow the heart\u201d).<\/div>\n

\u201cRide, is a song written about new beginnings,\u201d said Jamerson. \u201cIt was for myself during a time where I was just starting the journey as a solo artist. I had no one telling me to make the changes I was making, only my heart pulling me in a direction that I needed to go both professionally and personally. Sometimes when you don\u2019t know where to go or what to do, starting can be the hardest part. This song is about getting on the metaphorical horse and riding it just to see where it goes.\u201d<\/div>\n

The Wild Frontier was produced at MIMUS Studios in Winder, Georgia, with Levi Lowrey, an area musician and composer best known for his work with the Zac Brown Band.<\/div>\n

Joining Jamerson throughout The Wild Frontier are backing band The Morning Jays comprised of Wes Smith (acoustic\/electric guitar, keys, mandolin), Aaron Smith (fiddle, mandolin), Jordan Allen (bass), Thomas Albert (pedal steel, electric guitar) and Lawrence Nemenz (percussion). Also included are spot appearances from brother Joby Jamerson, Lowrey, Benji Shanks, Mark Stephens, Matt Meneffee and Emily Davis.<\/div>\n

\u201cI think this is my best performance from a vocal standpoint,\u201d said Jamerson. \u201cI feel like I\u2019ve learned to relax a lot more in my waking life and it has translated into my singing. For the longest time I would go into the studio and sing as hard as I could. I thought the harder you sang the more people would feel it.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

After busting out three albums relatively quickly since stepping away from country duo Sundy Best Jamerson opted to slow down the process for The Wild Frontier, moving away from a headspace of writing about direct life experiences to writing a conceptual story based on the fictional character \u201cWill of the Wild Frontier,\u201d visualized by the cowboy riding riding on top of a giant rabbit on the album\u2019s cover. The album follow\u2019s Will\u2019s battle to govern and discipline himself in his journey through a Wild Frontier full of conflict.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe concept of the record came to me after I read a passage in a copy of Told By Uncle Remus a friend gave me,\u201d said Jamerson. \u201cThe line was \u2018Sometimes we just need to hear a story to forget we were frightened.\u2019 It made me think of times my grandfather had distracted me with random stories when I was upset about something trivial as a child. So I thought about how true that was. Sometimes we just need or want to be distracted from our waking life.\u201d<\/div>\n

The vision led to Jamerson penning \u201cBrother Rabbit,\u201d a song about two brother rabbits struggling to survive in a world of dogs<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

and constant hunger. One rabbit gets taken in by a stranger named Mary who names him King and fattens him up, feeding him enough for two. The story ends by King leaving his home of comfort and rejoining his brother Duke in wild only to meet his untimely demise in the jaws of a big black dog due to his inability to escape as a result of his time in the laps of luxury.<\/div>\n

A song about gluttony, \u201cBrother Rabbit\u201d got Jamerson thinking about the seven deadly sins \u2013 pride, lust, wrath, envy, sloth, greed and gluttony \u2013 loosely basing songs based on those themes and how they fit into in his own life. Additionally, Jamerson tied in songs based on the seven virtues \u2013 diligence, justice, courage, charity, kindness, prudence and fortitude \u2013 to make up the album\u2019s 14 new tracks.<\/div>\n

Fans of Jamerson will recognize a few of the tracks on the album including the aforementioned \u201cBrother Rabbit\u201d along with \u201cLinda James\u201d (kindness), a member of Jamerson\u2019s small community in Eastern Kentucky he held dear that recently passed away; and \u201cFeather Bed\u201d (greed), a story about a husband and wife struggling to get by after the nearby coal mine closes up that decide to start selling dime bags of weed to everyone they know and stuffing the money they earn into an old feather bed.<\/div>\n

The high-strung \u201cGetting Better\u201d documents Will\u2019s battle to keep his benevolence in spite of the Wild Frontier\u2019s love affair with money and greed (\u201cI used to put my pennies in a band aid box \/ two dollar bills in the sock drawer \/ I was spending all my money like it was funny \/ I wanted to laugh a little more\u201d) before later coming to a crossroads on \u201cGambler,\u201d a chapter where his courage is tested as he looks back on his past and forward at dreams of a satisfying future, wondering if he made the right decision in embarking on his journey.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
After questioning himself on \u201cGambler,\u201d Will has a near death experience on \u201cWe Are\u201d after being caught in a terrible thunderstorm. With his life flashing before his eyes a green flame appears, bringing an epiphany upon Will and with it the peace of mind he long desired.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
With his mind at ease and the storm passed, Mother Nature visits Will on \u201cMother,\u201d a story illustrating the power of Mother Nature and motherhood and the sacrifices, strength and perseverance it takes to grow and raise a child (\u201cOh Mother \/ Goddess of the sky \/ You and my father \/ Gave me these eyes \/ You\u2019re a good shepherd \/ Tending to your flock \/ You raised well-behaved \/ You yielded good stock\u201d). The album reaches its harmonious conclusion on title track \u201cThe Wild Frontier,\u201d which touches on a memory of an old friend that helped Will through a particularly dark night on the Wild Frontier.<\/div>\n

Sprinkled among the album\u2019s 14 new tracks are excerpts and a monologue that help set the stage and curate and experience for the listener, something Jamerson sought out to do for the project.<\/div>\n

\u201cI believe the songs themselves are cinematic in nature so I wanted to add these audio elements that put a scene in the listeners head, like a musical movie,\u201d said Jamerson. \u201cI\u2019ve been calling it a ‘cosmic melo-drama.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n

Jamerson’s upcoming tour dates remain up in the air with the current state of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, all previously scheduled March shows have been put on hold as the situation unfolds.
