April 16, 2021 – Nashville, TN – Tony Joe White<\/a> was one of the world\u2019s finest painters. Okay, maybe not in the traditional sense, but the images he conjured with his lyrics have the originality and depth of anything hanging in the Louvre\u2014albeit free of pretension and probably wearing alligator boots. In a few short brush strokes, listeners get a basic understanding of what he\u2019s trying to say, but it\u2019s not until the entire song is revealed that the intricacies of White\u2019s songwriting and delivery garner the attention they deserve.<\/div>\n

Today, Garden & Gun<\/a> premiered \u201cSmoke from the Chimney,\u201d a slow-burning, nostalgic ballad from White\u2019s upcoming posthumous release of the same name\u2014a great example of his painting skills. In speaking with the record\u2019s producer Dan Auerbach about the \u201ctreasure trove\u201d album, Garden & Gun wrote that Tony Joe had \u201cthe kind of sound capable of converting casual listeners into superfans.\u201d Auerbach echoed, \u201cAs soon as I heard \u2018Rainy Night in Georgia\u2019\u2014I think I heard it at a record shop, Hymie\u2019s, in Minneapolis\u2014I just remember it blowing my mind. I bought the record and became an instant fan.\u201d An accompanying music video for \u201cSmoke from the Chimney\u201d was directed by noted artist and designer El Oms<\/a> who hand-painted each cell of animation. Smoke from the Chimney, a nine-song album of never-before-heard Tony Joe White tunes, will be released on May 7th on Auerbach\u2019s Easy Eye Sound label. Produced by Auerbach and rounded out by Nashville\u2019s most seasoned studio musicians, Smoke from the Chimney started out as a number of unadorned voice and guitar demos from White\u2019s home studio before being transformed into full band arrangements harkening back to the albums he recorded in the late 60s and early 70s in Nashville and Muscle Shoals\u2014just as he was emerging as an internationally recognized songwriter and recording artist.<\/div>\n

In the last 10 to 15 years of his life, White would preserve new compositions or revisit older tracks in his home studio with only a guitar\u2014usually his Fender Stratocaster\u2014and that inimitable voice. After his father\u2019s death in 2018, Jody White started transferring those multitrack home recordings to digital files. Looking back on the moment he unearthed the demo of \u201cSmoke from the Chimney,\u201d he recalls a mix of happiness, gratification, and shock. As he continued to find other songs that didn\u2019t make an album, he moved the material into a separate folder. Within a year, those select recordings would evolve into Smoke from the Chimney.<\/div>\n

\u201cThese songs feel like a collection to me and they all seem to work together, in a weird way, even though they\u2019re so different,\u201d says Auerbach. \u201cThere\u2019s some heartbreaking ballads and some really raunchy carnal blues. But it all works together like scenes of a movie.\u201d The cast of musical characters brought in by Auerbach to accompany White\u2019s guitar and vocal recordings includes legendary keyboardist Bobby Wood (Elvis Presley, Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett), Nashville pedal steel ace Paul Franklin, next-generation guitar hero Marcus King, and Grammy and ACM award-winning fiddler Stuart Duncan, just to name a few. \u201cThese are the musicians who I would have hired if Tony Joe were here,\u201d Auerbach told Garden & Gun. \u201cThey would have loved each other. Part of the reason this worked is because it was the right people.\u201d<\/div>\n

Jody believes that his father would love the way Smoke from the Chimney turned out. \u201cI feel like it\u2019s validation that Tony Joe was one of the greatest of all time,\u201d he says. \u201cThat he could make something so potent, even so late in life, is something that not many people can do. I think it\u2019s going to make people who loved him already love him even more.\u201d<\/div>\n
