I have diligently read about and studied the subject of what Bluegrass pioneer Mr. Carlton Haney concocted in Virginia in 1965, and what paved the way for today&#8217;s day and age, where we have hundreds of festivals to attend.<\/p>\n<p>For years of my life, I have actively searched for Bluegrass memorabilia from this first festival. Sadly many of the items from these eras of old, are owned or long been discarded in the trash&#8230;&#8230;people inherit things they have no idea how valuable they truly are.<\/p>\n<p>This legendary hero has passed away, and donated his entire collection to the fine folks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluegrasshall.org\/\">The Bluegrass Hall Of Fame<\/a> have curated a brand new exhibit. There is no finer institution for all of these precious artifacts, than the Bluegrass Hall Of Fame&nbsp; in Owensboro Ky.<\/p>\n<p>This man has willingly been kind enough to donate his entire collection of his own life memories, that will now soon be on display for the public to see. I for one shall be arranging a visit to them to view this! I MUST SEE THIS!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p6f0OnzClX0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here is the entire press release:<\/p>\n<div class=\"yiv6865920167e2ma-p-div\">\n<p><span class=\"yiv6865920167e2ma-style\">Noted musician and photographer, Phil Zimmerman, has donated his entire collection of historic bluegrass-related photographs and early recordings to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame &amp; Museum.&nbsp; Many of the images in this collection can also be found in his book, <em>Bluegrass Time<\/em>, which is also available through the museum store.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Zimmerman&#8217;s historic collection includes reel-to-reel audiotapes from the first multi-day, outdoor bluegrass festival held in 1965 in Fincastle, Virginia.&nbsp; Additional audiotapes of early bluegrass festivals feature Bill Monroe, The Osborne Brothers, The Stanley Brothers, Jimmy Martin, and Mother Maybelle Carter, along with the original equipment on which the recordings were made.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Executive Director of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame &amp; Museum, Chris Joslin, commented, \u201cI have long been a fan of Phil Zimmerman\u2019s work.&nbsp; Many of his photographs were featured in an exhibition here at the Hall of Fame in 2008.&nbsp; The collection of photographs featured in his book, <em>Bluegrass Time<\/em>, are iconic, and the book remains a popular item in our museum store with visitors to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame &amp; Museum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Based in Connecticut, Phil Zimmerman is a professional bluegrass musician, photographer, teacher, and arts administrator who has performed all over New England during the past fifty years. In 1972, he was co-founder of the band <em>Last Fair Deal<\/em> in the Hartford area, which is still performing and still popular to this day, playing primarily mandolin, banjo, and guitar. During his career, Zimmerman also worked very closely with his long-time collaborator, Grammy-winning Stacy Phillips, both in <em>The Bluegrass Characters<\/em> and the duet <em>Heroes of Tradition<\/em>. Additional bands he\u2019s been with include New York based <em>Ernie Sykes and The Suffolk County Boys,<\/em> and <em>American Flyer<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/garyhayescountry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Monroe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16627\" src=\"https:\/\/garyhayescountry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Monroe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"664\" height=\"832\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv6865920167e2ma-p-div\"><span class=\"yiv6865920167e2ma-style\">In making his donation Zimmerman said, \u201cI\u2019m proud of the historic bluegrass photographs I\u2019ve taken and original reel-to-reel recordings I\u2019ve made of early bluegrass performances, and I\u2019m delighted and honored that the prestigious Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame &amp; Museum has offered my work a lifetime home as part of its permanent collection.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>As a teacher, Zimmerman has mentored many young musicians one-on-one and served as Director of Music Camps North for several years, overseeing multi-day music camps in Charlton, MA, where he recruited many of the most influential bluegrass musicians as instructors. An accomplished musician himself, he is known for having the heart of a teacher with an eagerness to help musicians learn, improve, and engage with the bluegrass community.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Joslin further commented, &#8220;Phil Zimmerman has an energy and passion for bluegrass music that reminds me why people are drawn to this music and to the community of bluegrass. His photography is compelling because he captured historical moments in bluegrass music that were also part of his personal story.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did he document people like Bill Monroe; he also played music with Bill Monroe and developed a friendship with him and many of the other artists he photographed. Phil Zimmerman\u2019s photographs are important markers in the history of bluegrass music, and I am honored he trusts the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame &amp; Museum with his collection and with his story.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/garyhayescountry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Bush.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16628\" src=\"https:\/\/garyhayescountry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Bush.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"664\" height=\"828\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>From his website:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: x-large;\"><i>It was a long, straight shot<\/i> <\/span><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\">down I-81 to the Route 220\/Fincastle exit. My music buddy Peter Shenkin and I had no idea what to expect. All we had to go on was our love of bluegrass and a vague set of directions. We took the Fincastle exit and began looking for Carlton Haney\u2019s First Annual Roanoke Bluegrass Festival. We found the turn-off and followed the dusty tire tracks across a pasture toward the tree line in the distance. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\">Even before we reached the makeshift parking lot, we heard the thump of a stand-up bass wafting across the field on the hot late-summer breeze. Moments later we were navigating between small groups of musicians picking away. Back at school there were barely enough players to scrape together one band, but there we were, surrounded by bluegrass!<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\"><br \/>\nMost of my memories from Carlton\u2019s first festival have faded into general impressions, but a few memories still stand out. I\u2019d been listening to Bill Monroe recordings for a few years by then, but had never seen him live. I was impressed by his regal stature, tall and straight, supremely confident, impeccably dressed, with his white Stetson to finish &#8220;the look.&#8221; When he spoke, his voice was as musical as when he sang, rhythmic, lyrical, right to the point. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\">It made an interesting contrast to Carlton\u2019s slow North Carolina drawl, especially during Carlton\u2019s Sunday afternoon production of &#8220;The Bluegrass Sto-ry.&#8221; Jimmy Martin presented another type of interaction with Carlton. Jimmy was full of energy and attitude! I thought his wisecracking with Carlton bordered on disrespect, but I\u2019ve since learned that that\u2019s just Jimmy\u2019s way. &#8220;Carlton told me to be serious,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Well if I\u2019m serious, he\u2019s Roebuck!&#8221; he quipped.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\"><br \/>\nThe Stanley Brothers were very cool. They wore dark suits and ties, dark sunglasses, and loafers with white socks. Carter\u2019s singing was almost conversational in its intimacy, while Ralph\u2019s was more like the lonesome wind in the trees. George Shuffler was with them on his big Gibson Southern Jumbo guitar. George kept blinking his eyes rapidly, saying, &#8220;The sun, it effects my eyes\u2026.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\"> During the Stanleys\u2019 Saturday night show, hundreds of moths were swarming around the bare light bulbs and small floodlights that lit the stage. At one point, Carter opened his mouth to sing and inhaled one of the moths! He gagged and coughed it out, exclaiming, &#8220;Them chocolate bugs is alright, but them vanillers, I cain\u2019t hardly stand them!&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\"><br \/>\nBenny Martin was an absolutely commanding presence, physically and musically. He had a dashing swagger, and was all over every tune he played. He remarked that, &#8220;Once you can play bluegrass fiddle, you can play any kind of music \u2013 jazz, classical, anything.&#8221; Bill Monroe, on stage with him at the time, seconded that opinion.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\"><br \/>\nThe highpoint of the weekend for me was the Sunday afternoon &#8220;Bluegrass Story.&#8221; Carlton asked for complete silence from the audience. &#8220;We don\u2019t want to hear a sound,&#8221; he said, &#8220;just the wind in the trees.&#8221; Then Bill played his famous mandolin introduction to Muleskinner Blues, and they were off! <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\">Bill was on stage for the whole show, with only a few minutes respite while the Stanley Brothers did two songs with their own band. Otherwise, it was a parade of former Blue Grass Boys taking their place at the mic with Bill. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\">Ralph Rinzler was orchestrating things behind the scene, while Carlton was emceeing. Toward the end of the afternoon, Carlton introduced Bill\u2019s then current band, Peter Rowan, Lamar Grier, Gene Lowinger, and Bill\u2019s son James William. Because I was seated at the edge of the stage taping the show for Ralph Rinzler, I could hear all the off-mic conversation. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\">Carlton introduced Bill\u2019s son James, saying, &#8220;Here\u2019s a young man who in future years is really going to have to bear down.&#8221; I heard Bill say, under his breath, &#8220;He\u2019s going to have to bear down right now!&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\"><br \/>\nThe Bluegrass Story was the festival finale. After the reprise of Muleskinner, and the encore of John Henry, Carlton thanked everyone for coming, and for being such a good crowd. &#8220;There wasn\u2019t no fights, no trouble, or nothin\u2019,&#8221; he noted. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\">All the way home, the sounds of the weekend were ringing in my ears. I even thought I could hear banjo picking in the radio static. (This shouldn\u2019t surprise anyone!)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\"><br \/>\nSo, how did a college kid from up North even find his way to Cantrell\u2019s Horse Farm? Actually, I wasn\u2019t always from &#8220;up North.&#8221; Born and raised in the Mid-West, I listened to the Opry Farm Show as a boy in Omaha. Later, living in a Chicago suburb, I listened to hillbilly radio station WLS and watched cowboy singer Bob Atcher\u2019s TV shows. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\">After I entered the University of Rochester, I inherited a folk music radio show from a graduating senior. That led to a position on a committee responsible for producing cultural events on campus. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\">In that role, I was able to bring Doc Watson, among others, to our school. Ralph Rinzler was Doc\u2019s manager at that time, and we became friends. Ralph kept me informed about his activities with Doc, and eventually as Bill Monroe\u2019s manager.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: maroon; font-size: large;\"><br \/>\nIn the spring of 1965, Ralph told me about a Labor Day weekend bluegrass festival that he was helping to organize near Roanoke, Virginia. He asked me if I\u2019d be interested in helping out with the audio taping of the stage shows while he took care of staging. Well, boy howdy, yes!
