Johnny Cash has been covered by many artists in many different ways. Brian
\nOwens has taken the R&B route and has brought the soul out of these old
\nJohnny Cash tunes with his latest record titled Soul Of Cash. Some covers
\nare more successful than others, but they are all done with a passion that
\nshows Owen\u2019s love for Cash.<\/p>\n

There are two incredible covers on this album that makes it worth the price
\nof admission. \u201cRing of Fire\u201d and \u201cFolsom Prison\u201d are some of the most
\ncreative takes on these songs I have heard. \u201cRing of Fire\u201d harkens back to
\nthe Ray Charles version of the song while remaining it\u2019s own thing.
\n\u201cFolsom Prison\u201d has it\u2019s own groove. If Johnny Cash\u2019s original was a more
\nsomber warning about the slow pace of prison life, Brian Owens is looking
\nout of prison at a party train, and it\u2019s going fast down the tracks. His
\nvocal still has a somber longing quality, but the music is a dance track
\nthat you can imagine the passengers would hear in a party car.<\/p>\n

The next handful of tracks keep the somber quality of the Johnny Cash
\noriginals. \u201cWalk The Line\u201d has an amazing bass line as the focus of what
\nturns out to be a very smooth rendition. One of my favorite Cash songs is
\nhis take on \u201cLong Black Veil\u201d and Brian Owens and Dylan McDonald do a good
\nversion of it here. \u201cMan In Black\u201d brings another interesting take on a
\nCash original by making it a faster and less somber track. Cash\u2019s version
\nworked as a protest tune, and while Owens still retains that message, I\u2019m
\nnot sure if it works as a faster song.<\/p>\n

The album closes with an original tune titled \u201cSoul In My Country\u201d. This
\nsong is pretty much an explanation of why this album exists. It is Brian
\nOwens telling his own story about his connection to country music. Country
\nmusic and soul music have similar origins and they are both born out of the
\nchurch. This whole album bridges the gap between country and soul
\nsuccessfully and it is worth a listen for any fan of Johnny Cash. There is
\nno physical release for the album yet, however it is out everywhere digital
\nalbums are sold. They are planning a vinyl release in the future.<\/p>\n
