I watched the “Applause For The Cause” and I will write about it and include the FULL 8 HOUR video below. This event was one of the many benefit concerts that different people and brands hosted all over Texas to raise funds for the Texas flood victims this summer. This year has been one hell of a crazy ride for natural disasters all over the country.

This was held at the Whitewater Amphitheater in New Braunfels Texas on August 28th. It was organized by Robert Earl Keen and all of the artists donated their time here today, and apparently it was hot! Today, all of these proceeds in merchandise and ticket and food sales all went to this foundation I was told via media.

Kazimi Opened the show and she played one original from her album in 2024 called “River Run” called “Everywhere”, and two covers. They were “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers and “Wild One” by Faith Hill. Then they had a hero of the local fixture there by the name of Max Stalling, who once left a prestigious career with a big snack company for songwriting in Texas. I got to research his albums to prepare for this article here, and I enjoyed two of his originals from various 2007 albums, those songs being “Comfort in the Curves” and “Travelin’ Lite”.

Jason Boland, who played without the Stragglers (there was a house band more on that later), still sounded amazing as he played the title track from the 2008 album called “Comal County Blue”. Additionally, he played “Somewhere Down in Texas” and the other banger from that album called “Pearl Snaps”, which was the album title. YOU MUST go buy his new album called “The Last Kings of Babylon” right now, and if you click on the name in blue, it will take you to the website.

Another name on the current female list of road dogs on tour right now is Kelsey Waldon, who also has released a REALLY GOOD album called “Every Ghost” this year. Both of the songs that I took note of were from this new album that she played. They were “My Kin” and another called “Falling Down”, which was released as a single I believe.

Aaron Watson was another Red Dirt OG I discovered during his “The Road and The Rodeo” album, which was 2010. He began with his new single called “Getter Back Song”, and from his 2012 album called “Real Good Time”, he played “July in Cheyene”. From his 2015 Underdog album (which in my opinion is his best), he played “Freight Train”.

At this time I want to talk a little about the house band today and tonight. Lloyd Maines , played all kinds of different instruments throughout the entire show. Folks, ONE BAND covered MOST of these artists! The entire party was emceed by veteran TNN host Storme_Warren from way back in the day, and also Legendary David Grissom was there as part of the ACL All Star Band. See, Lloyd Maines is music director for Austin City Limits. Tom Van Schaik was also there on drums as well. Sean Giddings, and I also believe his brother John Giddings made up the rest of the band, who played up until there some acoustic rounds of trios.

Jamestown Revival had some of their members come out tonight to play songs like “Wandering Man” from their 2014 Utah album, and they also played “California Dreamin’ from the 2019 San Isabel album. Additionally they played a new song called “Shotgun Rider”. Then another Legend came out to play piano with a song called “Gimmie A Ride To Heaven Boys”, with Ryan Bingham and others. After that Robert Earl Keen sang “Amazing Grace”. Jack Ingram, Jon Randall and Miranda Lambert performed some songs from their Marfa Tapes album, which was held in such high regard by so many.
“Homegrown Tomatoes” was one of them as well as “In His Arms” and “Times like These” which was not on the album and may have been new? If it’s not, I am not familiar with it. Charlie Robison did his hit “Hometown’.

The next trio that came out and did a writer round type acoustic trio set here were Hayes Carll and another Legendary songwriter from the 80’s they tried to pass off as an artist Radney foster. And joining them was the legendary songwriting legend Ray Wylie Hubbard Of course Ray Wylie Hubbard opened with “Snake Farm” which had the whole place going nuts before Hayes Carll played a song he wrote with Ray Wylie called “Drunken Poet’s Dream”. Radney Foster played one called “Folding Money”. I found it live on Are You Ready For The Big Show, and See What You Want To See. Radney Foster played “Nobody Wins” and then they played “Up against The Wall”.

Cleto Cordero played a nice set with Josh Abott, Randy Rogers and William Clark Green. Let’s talk about that for a bit, shall we? One of the songs that Josh Abott began with was “You Ain’t Met My Texas Yet”, from his Small Town Family Dream album. William Clark Green played his ever popular “Ringling Road” from that album. They played “West Texas In My Eye” by the Panhandlers, and they also played “She Likes The Beatles”.

Then Cody Jinks, Jamey Johnson, and Ryan Bingham all played a round of their hits. Most certainly everyone knows Jamey Johnson is going to play “High Cost Of Living”, and “In Color’. Cody Jinks played one of my favorites called “Cast No Stones” and his anthem “Hippies And Cowboys”. One of the moments everyone was waiting for was when Cross Canadian Ragweed, who came out banging. They came out to classics like “Back Around”, and “Sick and Tired”.

3 Million Raised For Texas Hill Country At Buc-ee’s Presents: Robert Earl Keen & Friends: Applause For The Cause
Kerrville, TX – September 5, 2025 – Last Thursday, in front of a sold-out, in-person crowd—and a host of viewers streaming online—Buc-ee’s Presents Robert Earl Keen & Friends: Applause For The Cause raised 3 million dollars for the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country in the wake of the region’s devastating July 4 floods. Dreamt up and seen through by Keen and his hefty guest list of world-class artists, Applause For The Cause saw a special set swap between Keen and Tyler Childers, a revisiting of The Marfa Tapes songs from Miranda Lambert, Jon Randall, and Jack Ingram, two stellar tributes to Charlie Robison, and countless, whole-crowd sing-alongs. Read Rolling Stone’s review here. From the very beginning of the music-packed afternoon and evening at Whitewater Amphitheater outside of New Braunfels, Texas, Keen’s mission was clearly executed: Make a difference and have a blast doing it.
For those who missed out on the live stream, Applause For The Cause can be re-watched on demand on Robert Earl Keen’s YouTube channel, merch can still be purchased here, and, of course, direct donations can still be made to the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country at this link. From the stage, Keen reiterated the charge he gave himself and everyone in his orbit since July 4: “Do as much as you can, for as long as you can.”
Keen, along with the entire cast and crew of Applause For The Cause, would like to extend gratitude to Buc-ee’s, Amazon Music, DirecTV, Ruku TV, VEEPS, YouTube, American Heart Association, Brown-Forman, Turtlebox, Camp Fimfo, Central Market, Gruene Hall, HEB, Shiner Beers, Thrivent, Tito’s, Tri-City Distributors, Whataburger, and Whitewater Amphitheater for their gracious support of this fundraiser.
Under the supervision of BetterUnite, Applause For The Cause raised 3 million dollars (as of today) through ticket sales, merchandise purchases, a pre-party auction, and online donations throughout the live stream of which added 100 thousand dollars to the 3 million dollar total. Thrivent, a financial services company putting generosity at the heart of saving and investing, offered concertgoers a unique opportunity to write messages of gratitude for first responders and connected on-site directly with Texas Search and Rescue volunteers. Along with its clients, Thrivent has raised and donated nearly one million dollars to help support flood relief efforts in the region.
“Behind all the money collected and volunteer time on the ground, there is an immense sense of community and connection here,” said Thrivent Community Engagement Leader Amber Schraeder. “As the residents cried, we cried. As they prayed and hoped for recovery, we prayed and hoped with them. As the Hill Country recovers, we will be here to recover with them.”
While Buc-ee’s Presents: Robert Earl Keen & Friends Applause For The Cause is over and funds will soon be delivered to those individuals, businesses, and organizations in Texas who need it the most, this work is never over and the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country will need continued support. About Robert Earl Keen: After 21 albums full of songs like “Gringo Honeymoon,” “Feelin’ Good Again,” and “Corpus Christi Bay,” thousands of shows, songs cut by artists including George Strait and The Highwaymen, and many well-deserved accolades like the BMI Troubadour Award, the Texas Heritage Songwriter Hall of Fame, and the Texas A&M Distinguished Alumni Award—of which only 300 or so have been awarded from more than half-a-million graduates—it would be hard to find anybody in the same shoes who would willingly give it all up for a quiet life at home. As Keen projects from the stage every night, along with the help of every set of lungs in the room, “The road goes on forever, and the party never ends!”
Those words have never seemed more true for the Americana pioneer, and in Keen’s late-career renaissance, his party doesn’t just “never end,” it keeps growing. Just this year, Keen made an iconic, late-career debut on the Grand Ole Opry, was invited to join Tyler Childers for a sold out show at the world-famous Hollywood Bowl, and helped his old friends Turnpike Troubadours rattle Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater, all while continuing to headline his own shows in iconic venues, host his Americana Podcast: The 51st State, putting together a new book, and recording yet another new album.
