Summer is indeed in full swing with all sorts of music communities having concerts and festivals and house shows all over America! Nashville is currently jammed with thousands of people for CMA Fest right now. Also her of late I have been reporting on the Willie Nelson’s Fourth Of July Picnic, which is being held this year in Camden New Jersey.
Willie Nelson is now over 90 years old, and he is still very active. You had better take your butt down to see him play while you still can! No, Willie is going to outlive us all. He began this event more than fifty years ago in Dripping Springs Texas in 1973. The initial concept originally derived from a poorly promoted event called Dripping Springs Reunion, and culminated into what it is in the present day.
This is the first time for the Philadelphia area , but the picnic itself has been held Kansas City before. However it has always been held in Texas in most years. The very first event hosted by Willie at the same venue brought in 40,000 people, because it was promoted properly. However, in the 1970’s the reputation for so much trouble led to a difficulty finding a venue. In 1976, there were 140 arrests.
Throughout the years the long list of bands and artists that have taken part of this yearly event is absolutely astounding if u look at it. As most people know when you have a Willie Nelson concert, there really is no telling WHO will or can show up! The picnic has featured Snoop Dog to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to Shakey Graves! That fact alone has brought the safety and reputation of this event back up to an honorable statue.
