SoCal Fans, some of you might have recently seen the Shakey’s Pizza ad using our tune “8 Piece Box”. It is in fact Southern Culture on the Skids playing the song – Rick had to actually go in and recut some vocals and hit a quick remix for the “Mojo Potatoes” line. Not a problem — Rick actually enjoyed the trip down memory lane!

He remembers eating at Shakey’s Pizza when he was a kid, “It’s where you went after your Little League games for the team chow down” he also remembers the atmosphere, “to me, Shakey’s had a mix of barbershop quartet and Dixieland Jazz styles going on. The employees wore straw hats and stripped red shirts. How that added up to pizza was beyond me – but it was fun to go there, I always looked forward to it. My parents seemed to like it too – that might have been the Dixieland/Barbershop Quartet vibe – that was more in their wheelhouse. Later in my new wave skinny tie phase I actually found what I think was an old Shakey’s Pizza stripped shirt at a thrift store. I bought it thinking it might look pretty cool in a new stylistic context but it was 100% polyester and I could never get that Shakey’s smell out of it. That polyester can hold a funk!  But what do you expect a shirt to smell like after an 8 hour shift next to a pizza oven!”

Here is a short “making of” video Rick did at The Kudzu Ranch while he was working on the Shakey’s mix!
