This is another one of those articles I have been writing about bands that have been celebrating anniversaries of their albums for that year. We talked about Willie Nelson anniversary of “Phases And Stages” last week and now I wanted to talk about one of my favorite bands The Dead South. I watch a long list of their videos on youtube live and I have been to see them countless times.
I remember covering them in my Master Musician’s Festival articles from years past, and at that particular time Crawdaddy wasn’ t on banjo with them. he stepped out for a brief time. However, now the band is rising up to the top in many aspects. They are a truly amazing band to see in a small theater with a few thousand people, because they don’t have a backline or any huge pyrotechnics show.
In an intimate setting the four of them are an amazing force. Places like the Ryman are the perfect ambiance to their songs and their demeanor. Who would have figured that a song with nothing but a banjo, a cello and finger snaps would be their biggest song to date? It’s totally different, that’s why. Their vocals, their harmonies, and their timing isn’t something they just developed overnight. Their set takes work.
They have commemorative merchandise available and I included their video along with their press release and other information on this limited edition album. In ten years, this band has achieved so many accolades and they have grown as an overall unit. Every band has had it’s ups and downs with history and lineup changes, and even though The Dead South have suffered these as well, they have been moving rapidly forward now!

A little over 10 years ago we set out to record our first ever full-length album. Very young and excited, we decided to work at the same studio where we made our first EP – SoulSound Studio in our hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan. With just a few dozen live shows on our resume, our friend Orion Paradis at the helm, and about 14 songs ready to be recorded – as a group we decided that we wanted a very ‘real’ feel to this album, so we decided to record it live off the floor. Orion set Nate in the control room and the rest of the band in the recording area proper, all of us recording take after take of each song. None of the songs turned out perfect, but we were happy with the results of tracking this way (as opposed to the more common track-by-track recording style, where each instrument is recorded one at a time). We felt it helped preserve the live feel of the band and, even more importantly in those days, a cheaper way to make a record. Recording full days, with no shortage of coffee, couch naps, and delivery food to the back of the studio, we had the album recorded in about a week. We didn’t know then that one of the tracks we recorded would change our lives. A weird song with dark lyrics and the first song Danny had written for the band. Only featuring banjo, cello, vocals, and finger snaps, “In Hell I’ll Be In Good Company” ended up being the track that kickstarted our career. It’s fun looking back at this time, when we were just recording and playing live for fun and no one had a clue who we were. The fact that we’re still here 10 years later, doing what we love, is incredible and if someone would have told the young fellas in these photos where this project would lead, they would have called you crazy. Thank you all for 10 amazing years of Good Company and here’s to at least 10 more. Cheers! – Nate, Scott, Colton, and Danny |
